3 Myths about PSLE Math preparation [2021]
[ updated: July 2021 ]
As a parent, your web search history and bookmarked list must be laden with exam preparation resources and forums. We know the worries of Singaporean parents, and Nanolectures is here to bust some math myths that only the gullible will fall for.
Case Study 1:
“I just need to practise more math questions and I will be able to score well.”
We don’t deny the truth: practice does make perfect. Practising and improving your method can and will lead to a betterment of grades. However, practising more questions without changing to the right method and technique will only make your child really good at making the same mistake, over and over.
Case Study 2:
“I just need to read through the textbook book and memorize the formula and I will be able to do most of the questions in the exam.”
Reality Check: it’s the year 2021. That method might have worked a decade ago, but MOE now requires all schools design their questions very creatively now. Your child won’t succeed by just memorising the formula. In fact, he/she might have to practice all question variations for a single topic. Multiply this by the number of topics to be tested, and that’s more than a handful.
This is why Nanolectures employs our Multi-Variated Topical Analysis (MVTA) in our syllabus so that students can be exposed to all question variations for a single topic.
Case Study 3:
“I will do the examples in the textbook and the practice questions in my assessment book and I should be ready for the exam.”
Don’t let this shock you. But there is a huge difference in difficulty between questions found in the textbooks versus the assessment books. And an even larger difference in standard between assessment books and the examination questions. This is the main reason why teachers print mock papers (past year exam papers essentially) for students to practice, so that they will not be surprised by the difficult during the major examination.
At Nanolectures, we channel the same mindset by getting our students to revise with exam-standard questions found within our in-house curated materials and syllabus. Whether it’s the cram course or prodigy course, there’s something here at Nanolectures to suit your child’s learning needs.
